The Fascinating History & Meaning of Lorem Ipsum
Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random nonsense text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2,000 years old. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature, discovered the undoubtable source.
Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Marcus Tullius Cicero, written during the Roman Republic. This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the Renaissance. The standard chunk of Lorem Ipsum used since the 1500s is reproduced below:
